President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that former Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The honor serves as a direct rebuttal to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, which has consistently declined to induct the controversial athlete.
Trump framed the decision as an exercise in executive independence from sports institutions. “I’m pleased to announce that we are taking it into our own hands. Forget about the Hall…” the President said, characterizing the civilian decoration as a “big step up” from professional baseball’s highest accolade.
Clemens, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, has been a polarizing figure in baseball history due to allegations involving performance-enhancing substances. Despite his statistical achievements, he has been barred from Cooperstown, prompting Trump’s intervention to bestow the nation’s highest civilian award upon him.
Wait, did the President actually just award a sports medal because he was mad at a museum? What does this even mean for the award’s prestige?
This feels less like honoring a legend and more like a petty revenge strike against the Hall of Fame. Truly bizarre.
