After a two-year hiatus from live events, Microsoft returned today to showcase its latest hardware innovations and significant updates to Windows 11. The announcement focused heavily on the integration of local artificial intelligence and agentic workflows, aiming to redefine personal computing for both professional developers and home enthusiasts.
The headline product is the new Surface Laptop Ultra, originally teased in May 2026. This device marks Microsoft’s first offering to leverage the Nvidia RTX Spark system-on-chip (SoC). Pricing begins at $2,599, with various configurations available that feature either a 5,120-core or 6,144-core Blackwell GPU. The laptop can be equipped with up to 128GB of LPDDR5x unified memory. Pre-orders are currently open, with general shipping set to begin on October 16.
While the device is targeted primarily at the developer community, Microsoft used graphical performance demonstrations to illustrate its versatility. By utilizing unified memory allocation, the laptop bypasses the physical VRAM constraints typical of traditional discrete GPUs. This architecture allows the system to dynamically assign resources to handle modern gaming alongside local AI development and deployment tasks.
To prove its graphical capabilities, the company demonstrated Gears of War: E-Day running on the hardware. The successful demonstration indicated that AAA gaming titles are viable on the device despite the absence of a conventional dedicated graphics card, highlighting the potential of the new RTX Spark architecture.
