Trump Eases Restrictions on Dyed Diesel to Combat Soaring Fuel Costs

In a move aimed at reducing fuel expenses just weeks before the midterm elections, President Trump signed an executive order this week to temporarily loosen restrictions on “dyed diesel.” The measure permits the use of the heavily discounted fuel in highway vehicles through the end of the year, despite it being legally designated for off-road applications such as agricultural and construction equipment.

The decision addresses a sharp increase in diesel costs, with the U.S. average price for a gallon reaching a record high of $6.52 recently, according to AAA. Current prices remain approximately $2.60 higher than they were during the same period last year. Analysts warn that elevated diesel prices contribute to broader inflation, as the fuel is essential to the industrial supply chain, powering everything from farm tractors to freight trucks delivering goods to retailers.

Diesel prices have surged due to constrained global supplies. Disruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries that have taken production offline, and reduced diesel exports from both Russia and China have tightened availability. Will O’Neill, a principal analyst at S&P Global Energy, explained that red-dyed diesel is chemically nearly identical to standard diesel but contains a red dye to distinguish it for tax purposes.

Normally, this fuel is exempt from the federal tax of 24.4 cents per gallon applied to commercial diesel used on public roads. By allowing its use in on-road transport temporarily, the administration hopes to increase supply and alleviate cost pressures on frequent diesel users.
