Google Brings Sleep Detection and Tap-to-Mute to Pixel Buds 2A and Pro 2

Google has announced a new software update for its Pixel Buds 2A and Pro 2 earbuds, introducing several long-awaited features. The changes, which were initially teased last August, are currently being released to users.

The headline addition is sleep detection functionality that integrates with the Pixel Watch. When paired with the smartwatch, the earbuds can detect when the wearer falls asleep. Upon recognizing sleep, the buds automatically pause music, silence notifications, and disable touch controls to prevent accidental inputs during the night.

Additionally, both models will receive a tap-to-mute feature, allowing users to quickly mute or unmute their microphone during phone calls with a simple tap. It is worth noting that this feature is currently restricted to users who are also using a Pixel phone.

  1. Nice update, but why didn’t they just build in a physical mute button? Software solutions can feel glitchy sometimes.

  2. Does this actually work well, or will my dog barking still trigger the auto-pause mid-conversation? Skeptical here.

  3. Wait, the mute feature only works with Pixel phones? That’s a bit stingy for a global update announcement.

  4. Tap-to-mute is so basic, yet nobody else does it right. Glad Google finally added this essential feature.

  5. Finally, sleep detection is here! I’ve been waiting for this since the August tease. Game changer for insomniacs.
