Built-in Tools Offer a Way to Fight Spam Calls on iPhone and Android

Despite widespread concerns, spam calls remain a persistent issue for mobile users, but both Apple and Google have integrated robust filtering capabilities directly into their platforms. Industry tools like Truecaller were once the primary defense against unwanted calls, but modern versions of iOS and Android now offer native solutions that eliminate the need for paid third-party subscriptions.

Before adjusting phone settings, users should check with their wireless carrier, as many provide spam protection services that may be active by default or can be toggled on through online account portals or dedicated mobile apps.

For iPhone users, managing spam calls begins in the Settings app under the Phone section. Enabling the Spam toggle within the Call Filtering area ensures that calls identified as junk by your carrier bypass your ringer and are routed directly to voicemail. These interactions can later be reviewed in the Calls tab under a dedicated Spam folder.

To further organize incoming communications, the Unknown Callers feature separates recent calls from unsaved numbers into their own section. Users can manually mark specific numbers as known if they receive legitimate calls from new contacts. Additionally, the Screen Unknown Callers setting offers three levels of intervention: Never, which allows all calls to ring; Silence, which blocks all unsaved numbers; and Ask Reason for Calling. The latter option, available on iPhones running iOS 26 or newer in select regions, employs call screening to transcribe the caller’s purpose in real-time, allowing users to decide whether to answer based on the context.

Android devices vary in their spam protection features depending on the manufacturer, model, and dialer application. Most devices ship with Google’s Phone app, which includes built-in Caller ID and spam detection. Users can access these tools via the Settings menu under Call Assist, where enabling See caller and spam ID provides warnings for potential junk calls. Turning on Filter spam calls takes this a step further by automatically silencing suspected spam.

These Google Phone features require Android 6.0 or later and the latest app version set as the default dialer. For users with alternative dialers, switching to Google’s application may unlock these benefits. Furthermore, specific devices such as Google Pixel phones (Pixel 6 and newer) and certain Samsung models offer advanced call screening comparable to iOS. Pixel users can configure this through Settings > Spam and Call Screen, while Samsung owners can find similar options within their Phone app’s settings menu.
