The S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices both closed at historic highs, driven by a surge in artificial intelligence chipmakers and a decline in US Treasury yields. Despite underlying signs of instability in the broader US economy, investor sentiment remained positive heading into the close.
The S&P 500 climbed 0.58%, breaching the 7,800 mark for the first time in its history. The technology-focused Nasdaq index rose by 0.45%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.49%, although it remains slightly below the record levels it achieved earlier in August.
