Brazil’s Bolsonaro Consolidates Right-Wing Support Ahead of Runoff

Senator Flavio Bolsonaro secured crucial backing on Monday from two political rivals who had previously competed against him in Sunday’s first-round election. Ronaldo Caiado and Romeu Zema, both prominent right-wing figures, formally endorsed Flavio Bolsonaro for the presidential runoff scheduled later this month against President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

In an analysis shared with FRANCE 24’s Sharon Gaffney, Anthony Pereira, executive director of the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University, highlighted the shifting political landscape in Brazil. He noted that the country has gradually moved to the right over the past twenty years.

Pereira suggested that the path to victory may be more challenging for Lula, who must focus on mobilizing citizens who abstained from voting in the initial round. Conversely, Flavio Bolsonaro is expected to gain an advantage through the consolidation of support from voters who originally backed other right-wing candidates. According to the expert, this migration of votes makes Flavio Bolsonaro’s route to winning the second round appear more straightforward than Lula’s.

5 responses to “Brazil’s Bolsonaro Consolidates Right-Wing Support Ahead of Runoff”

  1. Let’s see if Caiado’s voters actually show up on election day. Alliances mean little without turnout.

  2. Flavio Bolsonaro seems to have the easier path strategically, but can he hold these varied factions together?

  3. Interesting how the political center of gravity has shifted so far right over two decades in Brazil.

  4. Do the endorsed candidates really control their bases, or is this just symbolic optics before the runoff?

  5. The right-wing consolidation is real. Lula faces an uphill battle needing to activate former abstainers.
