While recent headlines have warned of a powerful “planetary wave” causing trouble along the U.S. West Coast, scientists are urging the public to understand the nature of the event before panicking. The phenomenon, known as a Kelvin wave, recently struck South America and is currently on a trajectory toward California.
These waves are far from unusual; they are a regular occurrence in ocean dynamics. However, this particular Kelvin wave is carrying warm water that is typically confined to the western Pacific toward the Americas. This influx of warm water is causing sea levels to rise along coastlines that are already susceptible to erosion and other environmental stresses.
Although Kelvin waves are common, experts note that this specific instance could carry more dramatic consequences than usual. While the wave is not a “freak” anomaly, its arrival can exacerbate pre-existing vulnerabilities along the shoreline, prompting emergency measures such as the sand replenishment projects seen in San Clemente, California, during previous years.
