Green Party Deputy Leader Linked to Buy-to-Let Properties Despite Anti-Landlord Stance

Mothin Ali, the deputy leader of the Green Party, has been identified as the owner of two buy-to-let properties in Leeds, a position that contrasts with his party’s recent commitment to eliminating private landlordism.

According to Companies House records, Ali is the sole director and the primary person with significant control over MA Holdings, a firm he established in December 2021. The company acquired the rental properties in June 2022 and March 2025 using buy-to-let mortgages.

These purchases occurred prior to October 2025, when Green Party delegates formally adopted a motion titled “Abolish landlords.” That policy declares the private rental sector a mechanism for wealth extraction and calls for its effective end through increased regulation, taxes, rent controls, and the expansion of council housing.

A Green Party spokesperson stated that Ali does not profit from the properties and that he acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members with whom he has caring responsibilities. The spokesperson added that deeply personal information had been shared with the BBC in confidence and would not be made public to protect the family.

The BBC confirmed with the previous owner and resident of the second property that Ali’s company had purchased it with the intention of letting it out. The connection was initially reported by the Times newspaper.

When asked if Ali had taken steps to divest or alter the properties following the party’s policy shift, a spokesperson confirmed that Ali fully supports the new measures. Green Party MP Carla Denyer previously clarified that while the motion uses striking language, it aims to reduce the proportion of privately rented homes and increase social housing rather than literally abolishing all landlords.
