Gianni Infantino has confirmed he will run for re-election as president of the international football federation in March 2027.
The announcement comes amid significant backlash following the cancellation of plans to sell stakes in Fifa competitions to private equity firms. Infantino had initially revealed the strategy in April, which provoked a fierce global reaction and prompted UEFA to threaten a boycott of all Fifa tournaments, including the World Cup.
In a statement released Friday, Fifa reiterated that the Swiss official remains committed to his leadership role. “The Fifa president announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027,” the statement read. “Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election.”
Infantino continues to face pressure from across the football world regarding the proposed privatization scheme, which was ultimately scrapped after the intense criticism.
Surprising persistence. Do you think the federation is actually stable enough to face another term after this uproar?
Why is he even bothering? The privatization mess was a disaster and the backlash was universal. Good riddance.
