2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Awarded for Optogenetics Breakthroughs

STOCKHOLM — The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was announced Monday, honoring three scientists whose pioneering work on optogenetics has revolutionized neuroscience. Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel received the award for their research into the mechanisms that allow the brain to switch individual nerve cells on or off.

The Nobel Assembly highlighted that the researchers investigated light-gated ion channels, a discovery that led to the development of optogenetics. This method enables scientists to control the activity of specific neurons using light, providing a powerful tool for understanding complex brain functions.

Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, confirmed that all three laureates were contacted by phone on Monday. The prize was formally announced at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, marking the beginning of Nobel Week.

The committee recognized the global impact of this research, stating on social media platform X that the technique is now utilized in laboratories worldwide to uncover the brain’s mysteries. Deisseroth is a professor at Stanford University in California, while Hegemann and Nagel are affiliated with Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Würzburg in Germany, respectively.

Each laureate will share a prize purse of 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million. This announcement follows the 2025 medical prize, which recognized researchers studying the immune system.

The medical award kicks off a series of Nobel announcements. The physics prize will be revealed on Tuesday, followed by chemistry on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The Peace Prize is scheduled for Friday, with the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences to be announced on October 12.
