Nobel Prize Week Begins in Stockholm with Medicine Award

STOCKHOLM — The annual Nobel Prize ceremonies are set to begin on Monday in Stockholm with the announcement of the medicine prize at the Karolinska Institute, launching a week-long celebration of scientific and cultural achievement.

The event follows last year’s award, which was shared by three researchers—Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi. Their work identified a critical mechanism known as peripheral immune tolerance, explaining how the immune system distinguishes between foreign pathogens and the body’s own tissues. Medical experts have highlighted these findings as essential for advancing the understanding and treatment of autoimmune conditions, including Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.

Following the medical prize on Monday, the schedule continues with physics on Tuesday, chemistry on Wednesday, and literature on Thursday. The peace prize will be awarded on Friday, concluding with the announcement of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences on Oct. 12.

Laureates in any category—whether individual recipients, small teams, or organizations—are set to receive prize money totaling 12 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately $1.2 million.
