The Minnesota Vikings begin their quest to escape a decades-long period of quarterback uncertainty this Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, with Kyler Murray making his first start under center. After a rocky opening week in which rookie J.J. McCarthy was ruled out due to a knee injury, head coach Kevin O’Connell will turn to Murray for the Week 2 matchup.
The team’s struggles at the most important position on the field have been a persistent theme since 1961, marked by numerous high-priced free-agent acquisitions and draft picks that failed to deliver the necessary spark. This Sunday’s game against division rival Green Bay marks Minnesota’s second consecutive contest.
O’Connell addressed the recent history of quarterback turnover during his weekly media availability, suggesting that change is necessary. “I’m looking around the world, and there’s a lot of different versions of it,” he said. “I think I can make the case for the quarterback position where maybe you need to go a different direction.”
When asked if those changes might involve moving away from McCarthy, the coach responded, “I don’t know.” O’Connell added that the coaching staff is still reviewing the film from Week 1 and evaluating how to best support the next quarterback in line.
Minnesota (0-1) opens the season with a loss to Chicago. The Vikings will return to U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET for their home opener against the Packers.
