Jeffries Claims Democrats Poised to Retake House in Trump-Won Districts

WASHINGTON — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries declared Sunday that his party is on the verge of reclaiming control of the House, asserting that Democrats can overcome a financial disadvantage and make inroads into conservative districts that recently voted for President Donald Trump.

During a call with reporters, Jeffries, who stands ready to become Speaker if Democrats secure the majority, likened the current political climate to the 2018 midterm elections. In that cycle, Democrats swept into power during Trump’s first term, capturing numerous seats in districts that had supported the Republican president in 2016.

“In 2026, we’re poised to do the same thing,” Jeffries said, emphasizing that the party is targeting similar ground this cycle.

The comments reflect growing optimism among Democrats with one month remaining until the Nov. 3 elections. The party is shifting to an offensive strategy in Republican-held areas, while Trump has launched a campaign tour in red states to energize the base and shore up support for GOP candidates.

Despite Democratic confidence, Republicans hold a significant fundraising edge. House Speaker Mike Johnson is steering the party closer to Trump’s agenda in an effort to defend the majority. Trump has recently promised $5,000 cash dividends to voters if Republicans win, although the fiscal feasibility of such an expenditure remains uncertain. Additionally, he announced plans for $90 payments to seniors to help cover Medicare premiums.

Criticizing the opposition, Jeffries stated that Republicans are “failing and flailing” and argued that the public is rejecting the MAGA platform. He also pointed to potential missteps in Republican redistricting efforts in Texas, Florida, and other states, claiming these strategies have backfired in certain areas.

Supporting this view, the House Democrats’ campaign arm recently added eight districts to its competitive map, including locations in Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Washington state. “The Republican gerrymandering scheme has failed,” Jeffries said.

Jeffries cautioned that the race remains tight, noting that early voting is already underway and that gas prices linked to the conflict with Iran are pressuring Republicans. He urged his party to stay focused and avoid taking any seat for granted.

Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson continues to travel extensively, having recently campaigned in California and planning appearances in more than 40 districts across approximately 20 states before the election. Jeffries also indicated he will continue traveling to Western states in the coming weeks.
