Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is competing against Flávio Bolsonaro in the initial round of the 2026 presidential election. Flávio Bolsonaro is the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently imprisoned for his involvement in a plot to overthrow the government through a military coup.
Under Brazil’s electoral system, the president is chosen directly by voters, with any candidate securing over 50% of the vote avoiding the need for a runoff. Voting is scheduled to conclude at 17:00 BRT (21:00 BST).
