Trump Appoints Jay Clayton as White House AI Czar

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Jay Clayton, the current director of national intelligence, will also take on the role of White House AI czar. Clayton, who oversees the United States’ 18 intelligence agencies, is being tasked with leading the administration’s efforts in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.

Before his appointment to lead the intelligence community, Clayton built a significant career in law and financial regulation. He previously served as the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan and headed the Securities and Exchange Commission during Trump’s first term in office.

During his Senate confirmation hearing for the position of director of national intelligence, Clayton acknowledged the dual nature of artificial intelligence. He described the technology as a “gamechanger” while simultaneously warning that it also poses “a threat,” highlighting the complex challenges facing the new role.

  1. Combining intel and tech oversight? That’s a massive concentration of power. Hope there are checks and balances in place.

  2. Finally, someone with actual regulatory experience tackling AI. The SEC background should help cut through the hype.
