Guide: How to Disable or Restrict Apple Intelligence on iPhone in iOS 27

As Apple increasingly integrates artificial intelligence across its platform, managing these features has become more complex. While iOS 26 offered a simple system-wide toggle to disable Apple Intelligence entirely, users of iOS 27 must navigate through various menus to control specific AI capabilities. This guide outlines how to disable or restrict these features on Apple Intelligence-capable iPhones, including iPhone 15 Pro models and newer, as well as iPhone 16 devices.

For those still operating on iOS 26, the universal shut-off remains accessible via Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. However, iOS 27 users need to adjust individual components to limit AI interaction.

Disabling Siri AI or Switching to Classic Mode

iOS 27 introduced a significant AI overhaul to Siri, transforming it into a more conversational and context-aware assistant. Users who prefer the previous iteration can revert to the classic version. To remove the AI-powered Siri, navigate to Settings > Siri, scroll to the bottom, and select Turn Off Siri.

Once disabled, you can reactivate the assistant by returning to the same menu, tapping Turn On Siri, and selecting Use Siri Classic. This retains functionality for basic commands such as setting timers and playing music without the new AI-driven conversational features.

Removing AI Summaries

Apple Intelligence is designed to generate concise summaries for messages and notifications, though this feature has occasionally produced inaccurate results. These AI-generated recaps can be disabled in several areas:

  • Messages: Go to Settings > Apps > Messages and toggle off Summarize Messages.
  • Mail: Access Settings > Apps > Mail and disable Summarize Message Previews to revert to viewing the first lines of recent emails instead.
  • Notifications: Visit Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications to turn off summaries globally, or selectively enable the feature only for specific apps.

Additionally, users can prevent AI from placing high-priority notifications at the top of the stack by turning off Prioritize Notifications in the same settings menu.

Limiting AI-Based Suggestions

Beyond summaries, Apple Intelligence offers predictive suggestions across multiple apps. These can be restricted as follows:

  • Smart Replies: Disable AI-drafted email responses by going to Settings > Apps > Mail and turning off Personalize Smart Replies.
  • Voicemail Suggestions: In Settings > Apps > Phone, disable Suggestions in Voicemail to stop automatic creation of reminders or calendar events from transcripts.
  • Calling Info: To prevent the display of reservation numbers or other relevant data during calls, go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn off Show When Calling.
  • Journal Prompts: Navigate to Settings > Apps > Journal and disable Get Writing Prompts to stop AI suggestions within the Journal app.

Blocking Writing Tools and Image Generation

Controls for system-wide Writing Tools and image generation are not found in standard Siri settings but are located within Screen Time. To block these features, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, enable restrictions, and select Siri.

From this menu, you can apply the following blocks:

  • Writing Assistance: Set to Don’t Allow to disable rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing tools.
  • Image Creation: Block tools such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand.
  • Math Assistance: Prevent AI help with complex math problems in Calculator and Notes.
  • Extensions: Stop Apple Intelligence from delegating requests to third-party services like ChatGPT.

  1. Does anyone know if blocking these via Screen Time actually stops data collection, or just hides the UI? Hard to believe.

  2. I switched back to Siri Classic immediately. The new AI chatty version felt unnecessary for my daily tasks.

  3. Why do we need to jump through so many hoops just to turn off summaries? Simpler was better in iOS 26.

  4. Finally, granular controls instead of one giant switch. The Screen Time method is a bit clunky but I appreciate the detail.
