Sam Burgess has committed to remaining as Warrington Wolves head coach for the 2027 season, seeking to turn recent continental final defeats into motivation. The announcement follows Saturday’s 23-10 loss to Wakefield Trinity at Old Trafford, which extended Warrington’s record as losing finalists on rugby league’s biggest stage to five occasions.
Burgess, 37, guided the club back to the Super League decider for the first time since 2018, continuing a period of significant reach under his leadership. This recent trophy-less run includes narrow Challenge Cup final exits in both 2024 and 2025. Despite these near misses, the coach expressed strong conviction in the club’s direction and the identity they have established.
Although no formal contract has been signed yet, Burgess provided assurances to owner Simon Moran regarding his long-term plans. “I’ve not signed a contract yet but I’ve given my word to Simon Moran and that’s probably better than any contract,” Burgess stated. He highlighted the resilience of the squad, noting that the academy system sustained the team through a mid-season crisis involving 15 injured players. “I truly believe in where we’re going as a club… It’ll be the same again next year and I truly believe in our philosophy.”
The match itself saw young talents Ewan Irwin and Arron Lindop make impactful appearances. Irwin, 18, and Lindop, 20, combined to score all 10 points for Warrington, with Lindop crossing for both tries and Irwin adding the conversion. Their emergence reinforced Burgess’s optimism about the squad’s trajectory.
Reflecting on the result, Burgess acknowledged the difficulty of the outcome but framed it as a foundational step rather than an endpoint. “This is more of a beginning,” he said. “We’ve understood what it takes to get here now… and we’re determined to take that next step, but we have got to keep improving. I guess we have to let the pain of today drive us forward tomorrow.”
With Wakefield Trinity claiming their first Super League title since 1968, Warrington remains the most prominent club without a recent championship win. Burgess insisted the current squad is evolving into his preferred group and is confident that the wait for domestic glory will not extend further.
