Identity of Flydubai Flight 1073 Rescue Pilots Remains Unknown

Three days after uniformed crew members rushed into the cockpit to stabilize Flydubai Flight 1073 as it plunged toward disaster, their identities remain unpublished. The carrier, which was carrying 182 passengers bound for Israel, has referred to the individuals only as “on-duty crew members traveling on the plane,” offering no further clarification regarding their names or backgrounds.

Passenger Daniel Schlichter, seated in the second row, provided one of the most detailed accounts of the incident to The Associated Press, describing the men as unsung heroes. Schlichter noted that the presence of the two pilots was due to a standard operational procedure known as deadheading, wherein extra crew are transported to reposition aircraft; in this case, they were being flown back from Tel Aviv to Dubai.

The intervention followed a violent confrontation inside the cockpit. According to Schlichter, screaming passengers discovered that the co-pilot was repeatedly attacking the captain, leaving blood splattered throughout the area. Despite sustaining severe injuries, the captain managed to unlock the cockpit door before passengers subdued the assailant.

Schlichter recounted that one of the traveling pilots hurdled over the struggle to seize control of the aircraft, followed closely by his colleague. “He acted really like a hero, taking over the plane and reacted like he understood exactly what is going on, and I think we owe him our lives not less than the other heroes that went on the flight,” Schlichter said.

Once inside the cockpit, the two men worked for approximately 10 minutes or more to stabilize the aircraft, which had suffered significant damage, including a torn rudder, during its extreme descent. During this critical window, the pilots did not communicate with the cabin, causing anxiety among some passengers who feared the men might divert the plane to an alternative destination, such as Iran.

Relief spread through the cabin about 45 minutes later when the pilots announced they would make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Schlichter stated that the confirmation allowed him to place his trust in the individuals who had taken command of the flight.

  1. Why is the airline keeping this quiet? Transparency builds trust, especially after such a dramatic event.
