German Chancellor Merz Makes Unannounced Visit to Kyiv to Pledge Support

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Sunday, arriving in the Ukrainian capital to demonstrate Germany’s continued backing for Kyiv during its ongoing conflict with Russia.

The trip comes as Moscow intensifies missile and drone campaigns against the city, targeting critical energy infrastructure as winter approaches. In a statement released following his arrival, Merz emphasized the urgency of the moment. “I travelled to Kyiv today because Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks,” he said. “If Russia is not stopped, its war machine will sooner or later turn against us.”

Merz, whose nation remains one of Ukraine’s most significant supporters, was accompanied by Economy Minister Katherina Reiche. Upon his arrival by train, he was greeted by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, who indicated that discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky would cover bilateral, European, and international matters. “Ukraine and Germany have built a strong strategic partnership, and we are determined to deepen it further,” Sybiga wrote on the social media platform X.

The German chancellor promised Zelensky that he could “continue to count on our help,” while also highlighting growing economic cooperation between German and Ukrainian firms.

The visit occurs against a backdrop of heightened diplomatic tension. On Saturday, Russia warned foreigners and diplomats to depart Kyiv ahead of what it described as “massive” new airstrikes. The Russian foreign ministry stated that any negative consequences resulting from ignoring the warning would be the responsibility of those who remained.

Despite similar warnings issued by Moscow in May, leaders from nations supporting Ukraine have persisted in making official visits. However, the security situation in Kyiv has deteriorated significantly. In recent days, Russian forces have struck multiple bridges over the Dnipro River, causing severe traffic disruptions. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the city, which lies far from the front lines, as being in a “very dramatic situation” and called for it to be placed on a war footing.

Prior to this trip, Merz had urged unity within NATO, Europe, and his own government, where the far-right, Moscow-friendly AfD opposition party is gaining political ground.

5 responses to “German Chancellor Merz Makes Unannounced Visit to Kyiv to Pledge Support”

  1. It’s comforting to see tangible support, but words alone don’t rebuild the power grid. We need concrete winter aid now.

  2. Merz is playing a dangerous game. The AfD is already criticizing this, and the risks to German officials are escalating rapidly.

  3. I wonder how Zelensky received this surprise? Any word on new defense packages being discussed during these talks?

  4. Finally, leadership that understands the stakes. If Russia isn’t stopped now, Germany will face the consequences later.

  5. Symbolic gesture, but sending the Chancellor by train instead of plane seems like poor security sense given recent strikes.
