US Marine Detained Following Death of Japanese National in Okinawa

A United States service member has been taken into custody in connection with the death of a Japanese national in Okinawa, an incident that has prompted the Japanese government to file a formal diplomatic protest. Officials from the III Marine Expeditionary Force confirmed they are actively cooperating with Japanese authorities regarding allegations of serious criminal conduct.

In a statement shared on social media, the military force expressed deep condolences to the victim’s family and friends, though they did not immediately release the identity of the detained Marine or specify whether formal charges have been filed.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi characterized the event in Naha City as an alleged robbery and murder. She confirmed the arrest of a US Marine and described the incident as an extremely brutal and heinous crime. “As the Government of Japan, we have lodged a strong protest with the US side,” Takaichi stated.

The US Embassy in Tokyo acknowledged the incident and extended its deepest sympathies to the bereaved family. The embassy emphasized that an investigation is currently underway to establish the facts and that the US government continues to work closely with Japanese officials and local authorities.

US Ambassador to Japan George Glass reported that he held discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the governor of Okinawa on Sunday morning. He affirmed that his office is providing full cooperation with the ongoing investigation into the death.
