German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Sunday morning in an unannounced visit aimed at reinforcing Berlin’s support for Ukraine. He was accompanied by Katherina Reiche, Germany’s Economy Minister, alongside a delegation of prominent German business leaders.
According to reports from German media, the Chancellor is expected to unveil a comprehensive package of new measures to assist Kyiv in its resistance against the ongoing Russian invasion. The plan includes an additional billion euros in military assistance and €350 million ($395 million) dedicated to repairing the nation’s energy infrastructure.
Further details are expected regarding plans for the joint manufacturing of interceptor drones and long-range missiles within both Ukraine and Germany. Upon his arrival by train, Merz emphasized the strategic importance of the aid, stating, “If Russia is not stopped, it will turn its war machine against us sooner or later.”
The train arrival is a nice symbolic touch. Less flashy than a jet, but shows he’s not running from the reality of the war.
Will this aid actually reach the front lines quickly, or will it get bogged down in German bureaucracy like last time?
Thank you for coming to Kyiv! The energy repairs are lifesaving during this winter. Keep the support coming!
Wait, is Merz really Chancellor now? I thought Scholz was still in office. This headline feels off.
Finally, some real backing. The drone co-production deal is a smart move for both economies and defense capabilities.
