Latino Democrats Push DGA to Boost Investment in Texas Governor’s Race

Latino Democratic figures are intensifying their appeals for greater financial support in Texas, following a recent poll that indicates Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa has opened a narrow lead over Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

The New York Times/Siena College survey, released on Saturday, found Hinojosa ahead by three points. While this margin falls within the poll’s statistical error range, it marks a significant shift in a state where Abbott and his allies are outspending her campaign by an estimated ratio of 10-to-1.

According to reports first broken by The New York Times and confirmed by CBS News, more than 70 Latino Democratic leaders signed a letter this week urging the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and its chair, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, to commit $10 million to the Texas race.

Beshear, who is viewed as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential nomination, has faced constraints due to the DGA’s mandate to prioritize defending incumbent Democratic governors. However, several of those incumbents are currently in relatively strong positions, fueling arguments that resources could be redirected toward competitive races like Texas.

Julián Castro, the former San Antonio mayor and former HUD secretary under the Obama administration, amplified the call to action on Saturday. A contender in the 2020 presidential race, Castro took to social media to demand that the DGA and Beshear back Hinojosa
