Zach Bryan Wears ‘Free Palestine’ Shirt at Gillette Stadium, Honoring Slain Palestinian Girl

Country-rock artist Zach Bryan drew attention Friday night during his headlining set at Robert Kraft’s Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, by wearing a shirt displaying a “Free Palestine” message. This occurred just days after rapper Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour following similar political statements made at a venue owned by Kraft.

Bryan, a Navy veteran, appeared on stage wearing a sleeveless T-shirt featuring the “Free Palestine” logo. Below that text, the garment displayed a pine tree emblem alongside the phrase “An Appeal to Heaven.” These symbols reference a flag commissioned by George Washington in 1775 for American schooners, which later became associated with the Massachusetts Navy—a detail with local significance for the Boston-area concert.

Members of Bryan’s band also wore attire supporting the Palestinian cause. Drummer Nate Head donned a jersey with “Palestine” on the front and the name “Hind Rajab” along with the number 5 on the back. Rajab was a five-year-old girl from Gaza who died in January 2024 after being struck by Israeli military fire while trapped in a disabled vehicle. Golist Noah Le Gros wore a green Palestine soccer jersey during the performance.

Head later shared footage of his performance on Instagram Stories, using hashtags including “RIP Hind Rajab” and “Free Palestine.” The incident sparked mixed reactions online. While some conservative fans criticized the move, others, including commentator Candace Owens, praised Bryan for his stance, citing his military service and opposition to actions in Gaza.

Bryan has previously navigated a complex relationship with his fanbase regarding politics. His song “Bad News,” which contains lyrics referencing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), had previously triggered calls for boycotts from some listeners. Despite these controversies, his stadium tours have consistently sold out.

The appearance at Gillette Stadium comes shortly after Macklemore was dismissed from Ed Sheeran’s “Loop” tour in early September. Macklemore had made similar comments at MetLife Stadium, leading promoter Messina Touring Group to remove him from the roster after Kraft, a friend of Sheeran’s, refused to allow the tour to play at his venues if the rapper remained on the bill.

  1. At least his music speaks for itself. I just hope the merch and politics don’t overshadow the actual show.

  2. I’m confused about the historical pin tree reference. Can someone explain the 1775 flag connection more clearly?

  3. Is it fair to compare this directly to Macklemore’s situation? The contexts feel quite different to me.

  4. Wait, did they mention that the shirt also references the Massachusetts Navy? That local connection is pretty clever.
