Wolff Stumped as Mercedes Upgrades Appear to Set Team Back at Bahrain GP

Toto Wolff has acknowledged confusion surrounding Mercedes’ performance after its latest major upgrade package appeared to reduce qualifying speed at the Bahrain Grand Prix, which is being held in Malaysia due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Despite controlling the 2026 season thus far, Mercedes had introduced fewer upgrades than their rivals, raising expectations for the first significant update since May.

Arriving at the Sepang International Circuit following three consecutive race wins, the Silver Arrows were widely expected to extend their winning streak. Instead, championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth, while teammate George Russell placed eighth. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured a dominant pole position. Both Mercedes drivers will gain one grid position after third-place qualifier Isack Hadjar incurs a grid penalty.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Wolff described the situation as difficult to comprehend. He noted that Friday revealed unfamiliar car behavior, potentially exacerbated by the extreme heat and unique tarmac conditions in Malaysia. Although final practice suggested improved understanding with Antonelli, qualifying reverted to the lackluster performance seen previously.

“It looks like we are very draggy, because it’s the first time that we are losing a lot of time on the straights, especially to Max,” Wolff said. “And then through the low-speed, we are not able to turn the car. There’s just too much understeer. So, overall, things we haven’t seen this year.”

Verstappen’s pole was achieved with a comfortable margin, finishing half a second ahead of Antonelli and over two-tenths clear of Russell. Wolff emphasized that the team still believes the upgrades are effective but needs to decipher why they are underperforming under these specific conditions.

“You’re expecting three tenths to kick in, and it looks like three-four-five tenths backwards,” Wolff added. “It’s odd, but I guess we will find a solution.”

Russell entered the weekend confident after his strongest result of the season in Azerbaijan but found himself unable to replicate that form. He highlighted that the rough, broken tarmac and intense heat are placing severe demand on the tires, affecting Mercedes more than other teams. Russell’s deficit to Antonelli was compounded by a track limit infraction in Q2 that forced the Italian to use an additional set of tires, leaving the British driver with only one qualifying run in the final segment.

Antonelli expressed disappointment over his Q2 error but believed a clean lap could have secured second or third on the road. He acknowledged Verstappen’s exceptional speed and noted Ferrari’s significant progress compared to earlier practice sessions. Both drivers remain focused on recovering for Sunday’s race, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1.

  1. Heat and broken tarmac killing tire life again. Classic summer track struggles for the silver arrows this year.

  2. Five-tenths backwards is brutal. I hope Mercedes sorts this out before the next race, or the title fight is over.
