Banco Master Collapse Deepens Political Crisis in Brazil’s Election

A significant financial scandal involving the defunct lender Banco Master has emerged as a major factor in the growing disillusionment among Brazilian voters, casting a shadow over the nation’s upcoming presidential election. The affair has entangled figures from across the political spectrum, including business leaders, regulators, judges, and high-profile politicians.

Banco Master expanded rapidly over the past decade by offering high-yield deposit certificates, some returning up to 140 percent above Brazil’s benchmark interbank rate. However, prosecutors allege the institution lacked the necessary assets to support these payouts. Funds were reportedly siphoned into shell accounts, and the bank struggled to repay risky loans.

In 2025, Brazil’s Central Bank was forced to liquidate the mid-sized lender due to a severe funding crisis. Its owner, Daniel Vorcaro, was subsequently arrested and faces charges including money laundering and fraud. The bank’s failure triggered a nearly $7.7 billion payout from Brazil’s Credit Guarantee Fund, marking the largest disbursement in the nonprofit insurance program’s history.

Investigators believe Vorcaro shielded his fraudulent operations by cultivating relationships with influential elites. Among those drawn into the probe is Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, a candidate in the current presidential race. Recent documents unsealed by the Supreme Court reveal that Bolsonaro is under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering connected to Vorcaro.

Additionally, audio recordings have surfaced in which Bolsonaro appears to request millions in funding from the disgraced banker. The funds were reportedly intended to finance “Dark Horse,” a film depicting the life of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently imprisoned.

Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, characterizing the interaction as a private sponsorship deal unrelated to the Banco Master scandal. Despite his denials, the revelations have intensified pressure on the campaign and highlighted the breadth of the financial imbroglio.
