NY Governor Says Cornell Rape Victim Was Failed by Officials

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared that the woman at the center of a high-profile Cornell University sexual assault case was “failed at every turn” by local officials. On Friday, Hochul announced that New York Attorney General Letitia James will take over the investigation.

The case centers on allegations that Jane Doe, a Cornell student, was drugged and assaulted by multiple men at a fraternity house in 2024. While the incident was initially investigated by local authorities, no criminal charges were filed. The case recently resurfaced after Doe filed a civil lawsuit last month, drawing national attention to the allegations.

Speaking at a press conference, Hochul expressed that she was “deeply disturbed” by the handling of the initial probe. She stated that she had lost confidence in the local prosecutor’s ability to oversee the investigation impartially. Highlighting her frustration, Hochul noted that local prosecutors never interviewed the accuser directly, asserting that Doe was let down by institutions charged with her protection.

Governor Hochul also used the platform to announce legislative efforts to close a loophole that currently bars prosecutors from pursuing rape charges when a victim has voluntarily consumed drugs or alcohol. “If someone is too intoxicated to consent it should not matter if they chose to use drugs or alcohol,” Hochul said. “Voluntary intoxication is not a licence for gang rape.”

Attorney General Letitia James, who joined Hochul at the conference, pledged to conduct the new inquiry based strictly on facts and the law. Her office confirmed it would interview witnesses and move forward with prosecutions if the evidence warranted it.

District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, who previously directed the investigation, defended his office’s decision not to bring charges. He argued that his team did not receive sufficient evidence to meet the legal threshold for prosecution and claimed that much of the information recently released to the public was not shared with his office during the original inquiry.

Cornell University has stated that it provided evidence to the district attorney’s office from its own internal investigation. This included a Snapchat group chat in which fraternity members discussed a “free” sexual encounter with Doe on the night of the alleged assault.

  1. I hope the AG brings a fresh perspective. The initial handling was deeply troubling for everyone involved.
