Rent Revival Brings Gaten Matarazzo to London’s West End

The beloved musical Rent has returned to London’s West End, marking the 30th anniversary of Jonathan Larson’s groundbreaking work. The revival features Gaten Matarazzo, known for his role in Stranger Things, in the lead role of Mark, a documentary filmmaker.

Photographs by Tristram Kenton capture scenes from the production at the Tom Stoppard Theatre. Matarazzo’s character, Mark, chronicles the lives of his friends, including Roger, portrayed by Travis Ross. The show remains famous for its anthem ‘Seasons of Love,’ which challenges audiences to consider how they measure the value of a year.

Larson, who created the musical, died at age 35 on the eve of the show’s first off-Broadway preview in 1996. Following its debut, Rent achieved massive success, winning a Pulitzer Prize, securing four Tony Awards, and running for over 5,000 performances on Broadway.

This latest production is directed by Luke Sheppard, an Olivier Award winner for his work on Paddington: The Musical. Sheppard brings his theatrical experience to this revival of the cultural phenomenon.

  1. 30th anniversary revival? I just hope it captures the original gritty energy, not just celebrity casting. Fingers crossed.

  2. So glad Gaten is bringing this iconic role to life. His voice must sound incredible during Seasons of Love!
