French education authorities reported that approximately 100 high schools sustained serious damage as student demonstrations intensified into what officials have described as “urban violence” earlier this week. The French Ministry of Education confirmed that 40 school principals have been injured during the unrest.
On Friday alone, 400 schools were forced to close their doors. Since the tensions began, authorities have detained nearly 3,000 teenagers, and dozens of educational facilities have suffered damage beyond the most severe cases.
The grievances driving the protests are rooted in chronic systemic issues, including overcrowded classrooms, insufficient teaching staff, excessively heavy academic schedules, and unbearable classroom temperatures experienced during recent heatwaves.
In response to the escalating disorder, riot police have been deployed to the affected areas to confront the increasingly volatile demonstrations.
Why are these kids detained so harshly? Seems like the real issue is chronic understaffing.
Vandalism isn’t protest. Principals getting hurt crosses a line that teachers can’t ignore.
400 schools closed is shocking. The heat in classrooms is unbearable and nobody is fixing it.
