SpaceX Crew-13 Sets New Record for Fastest US Flight to ISS

A four-astronaut team aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule has established a new benchmark for speed in American spaceflight, docking with the International Space Station (ISS) in only 7 hours and 55 minutes. NASA confirmed that the Crew-13 mission achieved the fastest transit time from the United States to the orbital outpost.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 11:10 a.m. local time on Thursday. Less than eight hours later, the capsule, named “Grace,” successfully connected with the ISS port. This milestone represents not only a new record for Elon Musk’s private company but also for any American entity, including NASA, to reach the station.

According to NASA officials, the duration of the journey is largely determined by the relative distance between the spacecraft and the ISS at the moment of launch. In this instance, the positioning of the space station allowed for a significantly accelerated approach.

The Crew-13 team is composed of commander Jessica Watkins, alongside crewmates Luke Delaney from the United States, Joshua Kutryk from Canada, and Sergey Teteryatnikov from Russia. Watkins, an American astronaut, made history as the first Black woman to command a crewed mission to orbit.

The mission faced prior delays; the crew was originally scheduled to depart in mid-September but was held back due to a leak detected on the Dragon spacecraft. The team is expected to conduct scientific experiments at the ISS for a six-month duration before being relieved by Crew-12, which is scheduled to return to Earth on Monday.

While this US flight set a new speed record, the overall fastest journey to the ISS remains a Russian Soyuz spacecraft, which completed the trip in just over three hours in October 2020. Previous American crewed flights have taken considerably longer, with the most recent US departure requiring more than 30 hours for transit.

Despite the geopolitical tensions following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United States and other international partners continue their collaboration on the ISS. The station has been continuously occupied for 25 years, and NASA has committed to operating the facility through 2030.

5 responses to “SpaceX Crew-13 Sets New Record for Fastest US Flight to ISS”

  1. Seven hours and fifty-five minutes is impressive, but we should remember the Soyuz still holds the absolute fastest record.

  2. I wonder what it felt like for the crew? Docking in under eight hours must be a serious physical test for their bodies.

  3. Great to see Watkins commanding again. Also impressive that US-Russia cooperation continues despite all the political tensions right now.

  4. Wait, doesn’t the Russian Soyuz hold the record at three hours? I thought US spacecraft were slower for safety reasons.

  5. Incredible speed! Seven hours is a huge jump from the old 30-hour standard. Space tech is moving fast.
