The Australian government is intensifying its scrutiny of international student migration pathways, targeting what it describes as “visa hopping” and the role of migration agents and lawyers who allegedly provide misleading information to applicants seeking long-term residency.
Announcements made on Friday outlined new restrictions requiring students to submit a separate visa application if they wish to transfer between courses. This measure complements previously implemented rules that prohibit transfers from higher education degrees, such as bachelor’s or master’s programs, to vocational education and training.
These changes are part of the Labor government’s broader strategy to curb what officials term “permanently temporary” migration and reduce overall overseas arrivals.
