Fervo Energy Completes World’s First Enhanced Geothermal Plant Ahead of Schedule

Fervo Energy announced Thursday that its Cape Station power plant officially began selling electricity to the grid on September 30, completing operations one day earlier than planned. This achievement marks a significant commercial milestone for the enhanced geothermal sector, positioning Fervo as the first company in the field to reach this stage.

The facility synchronized with the power grid approximately one week prior to the sales launch, bringing online the initial third of a planned 100-megawatt installation. However, the site holds potential for substantial expansion, with capacity estimates reaching up to 4 gigawatts, according to previous disclosures to TechCrunch.

“No team has ever built a project like this anywhere in the world, and we did it ahead of schedule,” said Tim Latimer, co-founder and CEO of Fervo. The timeline from groundbreaking to commercial operation for the first block totaled just 23 months. As the company refines its methodology, it aims to reduce the construction period for future blocks to as little as 18 months.

This rapid deployment timeline is expected to be particularly attractive to data center operators seeking energy solutions, as geothermal projects can be developed in phases. This modular approach allows hyperscalers to bring computing infrastructure online incrementally as power demand increases.

Major technology and utility firms, including Google and Southern California Edison, have already committed to purchasing power from the Cape Station project. Fervo distinguishes itself from traditional geothermal providers by drilling deeper into hotter rock formations, thereby accessing a broader range of development opportunities.

Fervo went public in May through an upsized initial public offering that raised $1.9 billion, fueled significantly by demand from AI-driven data centers. Founded in 2017, the company applies drilling technologies derived from the oil and gas industry to geothermal resource development. Before its IPO, the startup secured more than $1.3 billion in investment from firms such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Congruent Ventures, and Capricorn Investment Group.

  1. Google buying power from this is huge news. Does this mean AI data centers are going green, or just cheaper?

  2. Seventeen months for the next phase? That is incredibly fast for energy infrastructure. Geothermal might finally be ready for prime time.
