The family of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen killed by federal immigration agents in Minnesota, has initiated legal action against the Trump administration. The lawsuits, filed on Thursday, allege that officials acted recklessly and violated civil rights during a widespread deportation operation last winter.
Becca Good, Renee’s partner, and her brother, Brent Ganger, are seeking a jury trial and financial damages. These filings represent the first major civil suits brought against the administration regarding its aggressive immigration crackdowns in Minneapolis, an effort known as Operation Metro Surge.
The wrongful death lawsuit cites claims of assault, battery, false imprisonment, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress under Minnesota law. A separate complaint alleges a civil rights conspiracy involving multiple defendants, including ICE officer Jonathon Ross, who shot Good, and high-ranking Trump officials such as White House Deputy Policy Chief Stephen Miller, former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, former Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino, and Corey Lewandowski.
Good, a mother of three, was killed in south Minneapolis while participating in daily demonstrations against armed federal agents deployed to arrest migrants. Eyewitness video captured Ross firing through Good’s windshield, striking her in the head, arm, and torso.
Federal officials initially defended Ross, claiming he acted in self-defense and accusing Good of domestic terrorism. Former President Donald Trump also defended the shooting on Truth Social, attributing such incidents to threats against law enforcement by political opponents.
Following the shooting, Deputy Attorney Todd Blanche blocked federal prosecutors from pursuing criminal civil rights charges against the agents involved. This decision led to the resignation of at least six prosecutors. Although Minnesota sued the administration in March to access crime scene evidence, investigations have stalled after the Justice Department halted routine cooperation with local police.
No agents involved in Good’s death have faced charges.
