Stella McCartney has made a bold statement at Paris Fashion Week, centering her latest collection on the theme “sea life, not sea food.” For three decades, the designer has been a vocal advocate for animal rights within the fashion industry, but this season the conversation has shifted from niche concerns to the mainstream spotlight.

The renewed focus follows controversy surrounding the physical restraint of a PETA protester by Steven Kolb, president of New York Fashion Week’s governing body, which has brought attention to cruelty in wool production—a topic previously overshadowed by debates over fur.

Confirming her commitment to ethical standards, McCartney stated, “There is no wool on the runway this season, and I’m proud of that.” Her recent work has prioritized innovative alternatives, including Brewed Protein, a fermented fabric developed in partnership with Japanese biotech firm Spiber. This material, which serves as both a cashmere and wool substitute, was first incorporated into her collections a year ago.

Reflecting on the effort required to maintain these ethical standards, McCartney added, “kindness requires real work.” The show featured ocean-inspired garments that underscore her dedication to moving away from animal-derived textiles.

  1. I wonder if other major houses will follow her lead, or if this remains a niche stance for luxury buyers?

  2. Love the shift to ocean themes. Finally, high fashion proves you don’t need wool to stay warm and chic.
