Former Australia rugby international Nathan Charles has publicly confirmed a diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND), the same progressive neurological condition that recently claimed the life of National Rugby League star Jai Arrow.
The 37-year-old hooker, who overcame cystic fibrosis to become one of the few players with the condition to reach professional rugby at the highest level, made his Test debut in 2014 and earned four caps for the Wallabies between 2014 and 2015. His career included a start in the historic 12-12 draw against New Zealand.
Speaking during an interview on Stan Sport with former Wallabies lock Justin Harrison, Charles revealed the diagnosis came only in recent weeks after a long period of uncertainty. “For a long period there I just didn’t know what it was,” Charles said. “I’ve had many tests and seen many doctors, but we just weren’t getting any answers. My health just kept declining.”
He described the news as “extremely challenging and overwhelming,” acknowledging the grim reality of the illness. “I know there’s no cure and … your physicality, your body deteriorates and, yeah, your life cuts short.”
