Former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Republican candidate Steve Hilton engaged in a heated exchange during Wednesday’s California gubernatorial debate. The candidates, who are competing to replace Governor Gavin Newsom, found themselves at odds over the pervasive influence of former President Donald Trump throughout the campaign.
The hourlong CNN debate marked the only scheduled contest between the candidates. Throughout the session, Becerra and Hilton sparred on critical topics including the state’s economy, immigration policies, and healthcare systems. The confrontation highlighted the sharp contrasts between the Democrat and the former Fox News host as they vie for control of the governor’s office.
The immigration exchange was intense. Hilton’s points felt rehearsed, but Becerra’s rebuttals were sharp. Glad someone is watching closely.
Just one debate for governor? California needs more forums. The voters deserve better than a single hour to decide our next leader.
I was surprised by how focused Hilton stayed on economic growth despite the Trump distractions. At least he had a clear message there.
Anyone else notice Becerra spent most of the debate defending Newsom instead of outlining his own plan? That seems like a missed opportunity.
Hilton didn’t look comfortable pivoting every time Trump’s name came up. Hard to lead when you’re still tied to his shadow.
