A comprehensive report released Wednesday by the Massachusetts attorney general’s office reveals that more than 270 Catholic clerics sexually abused approximately 1,000 children across three dioceses over a period spanning several decades. The findings conclude an eight-year investigation into the extent of the abuse within the church.
Despite identifying widespread misconduct, officials confirmed that the probe did not yield any new indictments. The attorney general’s office explained that certain behaviors documented during the investigation did not constitute criminal offenses under Massachusetts law at the time they occurred. In additional cases, the applicable statute of limitations had already expired, precluding legal prosecution.
State authorities emphasized that the evidence indicates the church was aware of the abuse taking place.
