The adage “hardware is hard” remains a central mantra in the tech industry. Previous dedicated AI gadgets, such as the Friend and Humane AI Pin, have generated widespread frustration and public backlash. With growing societal anger toward AI likely to intensify, these prior failures serve as stark cautionary tales.
Despite these warnings, both companies are pressing forward. OpenAI is reportedly collaborating with Jony Ive, the acclaimed former Apple designer, on its hardware ambitions. The strategy appears to be testing consumer appetite for tangible devices by leveraging the appeal of endearing digital companions, akin to the interactive nature of a Tamagotchi.
