DoorDash introduces AI agent accessible via text messages

DoorDash announced on Wednesday the debut of a new artificial intelligence agent that allows customers to place food orders directly through Apple Messages. The service is designed to simplify the ordering process by enabling users to send natural language prompts, such as “order my usual,” which the system interprets to replicate previous purchases like a regular Friday night meal.

According to the company, the AI tool can also assist users who are undecided by suggesting local restaurants based on specific dish requests. The agent processes these queries to build a shopping cart and can even send photographs of the recommended meals. For group orders, the system is equipped to manage diverse dietary restrictions and varying portion sizes within a single transaction.

This move is part of a broader industry trend toward personal AI agents that reduce the need for users to navigate traditional apps or websites. By streamlining the experience, DoorDash hopes to gain a competitive advantage over rivals Uber Eats and Grubhub.

DoorDash is currently accepting sign-ups for a waitlist open to users in the United States. In addition to the text-based AI service, the company revealed plans to begin testing delivery drones in collaboration with select restaurant partners in Northern California.

  1. It’s clever tech, sure, but will it actually save time compared to just tapping the app? Feels like more steps to me.

  2. Uber Eats better step up their text game fast. If they fall behind here, it could really hurt their market share soon.

  3. I love the convenience, but can it handle that one friend in the group who insists on extra spicy? Really hoping so!

  4. Does this mean DoorDash now has all my dietary restrictions and location data? Pretty sure I’m opting out for privacy reasons.

  5. Finally, I don’t have to dig through apps while holding a crying baby. This is a game changer for busy parents everywhere.
