Senegal’s Youth Olympics Paves Way for Africa’s First Summer Games

The first-ever Olympic event on African soil is set to take place in late October 2026, as the Youth Olympics arrive in Senegal. Approximately 2,700 young athletes will compete in 153 events across 25 sports, with many having secured their spots through the African Youth Games held the previous year.

At the torch arrival ceremony, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye emphasized the significance of the moment for the continent. “We were entrusted with hosting this event and that is why from Johannesburg to Nairobi, from Dakar to Djibouti, it is all of young Africa that is watching you and watching you with pride,” he stated.

This occasion represents a broader shift in global sports’ focus toward Africa. After the first major road cycling championships hosted on the continent in 2025 and the announcement last September that Kenya will host the World Athletics Championships in 2029, sports experts believe the region is re-entering the global spotlight. This follows the historic 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, with ongoing discussions also exploring a potential return of Formula 1.

Malick Diouf, head of a marketing agency and founder of the Dakar Sport Summit, described the event as a decisive victory for the continent. “Africa is in the process of opening up to the world, hosting major events and everything. And all of Africa must celebrate this kind of victory,” Diouf told DW.

As major events continue to land in Africa, speculation about hosting the full Summer Olympics has intensified. Sports scientist Kamilla Swart has argued that awarding the Games to Africa would elevate the continent’s global standing. Diouf agrees, calling the Youth Olympics a crucial test and a logical precursor to a full Olympic Games.

“We, Africa, are ready to host the Summer Olympics, and I think that would be the logical next step after the Dakar Olympics,” Diouf said. “We have Olympic champions; we have record holders; we have Olympians, so we deserve to host the Olympic Games.”

Senegal’s bid was reportedly favored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to its strategy of refurbishing existing infrastructure rather than constructing new venues—a move designed to avoid the issue of unused “white elephant” stadiums. The Iba Mar Diop Stadium, serving as the track and field venue, is expected to remain a key training site for athletes competing in the 2028 Olympics.

Diouf highlighted the wider economic and social ripple effects expected from the Games, including improvements to roads, hospitality, security, and broadcasting sectors. “There’s life after the Games. Now we need to figure out how to use the resources we have, we need to develop and capitalize on what we have showcased during the Games,” he added.

However, the future of the Youth Olympics itself remains uncertain. In May, IOC President Kirsty Coventry announced a pause on the 2030 Games cycle, citing a need to reassess the event’s strategic purpose. “There’s not a true North Star of why we’re doing the Youth Olympic Games,” Coventry explained, noting that the IOC Executive Board decided to step back and develop a new youth strategy.

Since their inception in 2010, the Youth Games have aimed to engage younger audiences through novel sports and smaller-scale competitions. However, challenges such as declining youth engagement in modern sports entertainment and concerns over athlete ages have prompted the IOC to reconsider its investment in the event.

Despite the potential uncertainty for future editions, Diouf urged organizers to ensure this iteration is a success. “My only wish is that Dakar be memorable… I don’t want these to be the last Youth Olympic Games, but if these are to be the last Youth Olympic Games, we need to go out with a bang,” he said.

Senegal will host the Games from October 31 to November 13.
