Senior figures from the INDIA opposition alliance convened at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on Wednesday to address mounting tensions surrounding the Election Commission of India (ECI) and its Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The gathering focuses on coordinating a unified stance against the poll body’s recent administrative changes and the conduct of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the Indian National Congress, vigorously called for the reversal of the SIR process. Describing the revision as a threat to the democratic principle of “one person, one vote, one value,” Kharge highlighted that approximately 133 million voters have been removed from the rolls since the exercise began last year. He argued that ordinary citizens, rather than those in power, should determine electoral outcomes.
The meeting follows an investigative report by the Indian Express released last week, which alleged internal dissent within the ECI. The report claims that commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi filed at least 14 formal objections over a ten-month period regarding voter deletions, restorations, and data control. According to the publication, these concerns were disregarded by Kumar, with one commissioner characterizing the commission’s actions as “unauthorized and illegal.”
The ECI has dismissed these allegations, maintaining that all its decisions are lawful and that divergent viewpoints are a standard component of its decision-making process. The commission states that the SIR aims to eliminate deceased individuals, duplicates, and relocated voters, while also barring illegal immigrants.
However, opposition parties contend that the revisions have exceeded their intended scope, allegedly removing millions of eligible voters in a manner that benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Kharge asserted that Kumar’s integrity and intentions are now in question, demanding his resignation to ensure an independent and impartial electoral body.
The political outcry has already sparked nationwide demonstrations led by the Congress party. Additionally, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a pressure group claiming millions of supporters, announced plans to initiate further nationwide protests on October 2 if Kumar does not step down.
