Sony Introduces Anti-Scalper Lottery for PS5 Pro in Japan

Sony has announced a new purchase restriction system for the PS5 Pro in Japan, designed to curb reselling and ensure the console reaches genuine gamers. To be eligible, buyers must register with a Japanese Sony account and demonstrate significant prior usage of the platform.

Under the rules, applicants must show they have played at least 60 hours on a PS5 or PS4—or a combination of both—between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. Additionally, the account used to verify this activity must be the same one used to submit the purchase application.

Eligible users can begin applying on October 7. Approved applicants will have the opportunity to buy a unit from October 26 through November 2. If applications exceed available inventory, Sony will utilize a lottery system to determine who receives the console. The company states the measure is intended to prevent scalpers from hoarding stock and to stop tourists from purchasing units while visiting Japan.

The move comes as Sony continues to face component supply constraints that are expected to last through early 2027. In the United States, the PS5 Pro has already been difficult to find at major retailers due to these shortages. Despite a recent $150 price increase, demand for the Pro model remains high, particularly following the announcement of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is confirmed as PS5 Pro Enhanced to leverage the system’s superior hardware capabilities.
