Boeing received a major defense contract Tuesday from the U.S. Navy to lead the development of its next-generation fighter jet. The agreement, valued at over $20 billion during the full-scale development phase, marks a significant milestone for the aerospace manufacturer as it moves forward with the F/A-XX Strike Fighter program.
The new aircraft is designed to eventually replace the Navy’s current fleet of F/A-18 Super Hornets. According to Boeing, the F/A-XX will feature advanced open mission systems architecture, next-level mission systems, and improved operational reach and capacity.
This award represents the second prestigious sixth-generation fighter contract for Boeing in as many years. In 2025, the Air Force selected the company to develop its F-47 fighter jet. Responding to the news, Michael P. Duffey, the Under Secretary of War for acquisition and sustainment, stated that the F/A-XX is a critical component of the nation’s commitment to maintaining peace through strength, capable of dominating contested airspace and providing a decisive combat advantage.
Investors reacted positively to the announcement. Boeing shares closed up 1.8% on Tuesday, following a broader 3% rise after the deal was confirmed. The stock has shown overall strength, up 5.32% over recent trading sessions.
The defense win comes as Boeing navigates regulatory challenges in its commercial aviation division. On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration delayed certification of the 737 Max 10 due to a software glitch identified in some aircraft that could affect landing procedures. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford noted at a press conference in Washington, D.C., that officials are postponing approval until they are satisfied there is no safety-of-flight issue.
