AMD has announced plans to acquire World Labs, a company specializing in AI-driven world models, with the transaction expected to close by the end of the year subject to regulatory clearance. The deal is valued at $8.2 billion.
World Labs was established in 2024 by computer vision expert Fei-Fei Li alongside co-founders Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall. The startup initially secured $230 million in funding, which included an investment from AMD.
The company is developing world models designed to create predictive simulations of the physical environment. While other approaches in this field often rely on training algorithms using massive libraries of video footage, AMD’s acquisition aims to leverage this technology to strengthen its competitive position against Nvidia in the AI hardware and software market.
