Johnson made these remarks ahead of a meeting in Washington with AI executives and President Donald Trump. He suggested that tech leaders recognize the necessity of ensuring the technology is developed safely to maintain public and investor confidence. “I hope it’s voluntary,” Johnson said. “We’ll find out what comes out of the meeting today. I think that’s where they’re headed.”
The comments arise amid intensifying pressure from both industry executives and fellow lawmakers for Congress to act swiftly on legislation that would create a regulatory structure for AI and impose government limits to prevent potential harm. AI executives have recently cautioned that the technology poses catastrophic risks if it malfunctions, urging Washington to intervene to slow the pace of frontier technology development.
