Fireflies.ai, a company that has established itself in the AI-driven meeting note-taking sector, is broadening its scope with a new dictation feature. Available on both Mac and Windows platforms, the update aims to merge voice input capabilities with the firm’s existing productivity suite.
Known as Fireflies Talk, the feature operates similarly to competitors like Wispr Flow, Willow, and SuperWhisper. Users can initiate voice recording by pressing the Fn key on macOS or Ctrl + Win on Windows, regardless of which application is currently active. The system then records the audio and transcribes the speech directly into the text field of the open app, filtering out filler words and formatting the output neatly.
Fredrik “Fred” Ramineni, CEO of Fireflies, emphasized the efficiency of voice over typing in an email to TechCrunch. He noted that people speak approximately three times faster than they type, describing voice as a more natural method for completing tasks. According to Ramineni, meetings served only as the initial entry point for the company. The broader goal is to position “Fred” as an AI teammate that assists users throughout their entire workday, extending capabilities into email management, Slack, documents, and prompt generation.
In a strategic move that contrasts with some competitors, Fireflies has integrated the dictation tool into its existing subscription plans rather than offering it as a separate paid product. This approach differs from Wispr, which recently launched a meeting note-taker for free for its current dictation users, and Speechify, which has also rolled out dictation across various applications.
Addressing privacy concerns, Fireflies stated that it does not retain audio recordings of dictation sessions. Instead, transcripts are stored locally on the user’s device. The company continues to focus on automating workflows by leveraging context built from meeting transcriptions. This strategy includes previous launches such as “mini-apps” for extracting insights from meetings and an email assistant designed to organize inboxes and draft messages.
