North Wales Police Seek Mother After Newborn Body Found on Shoreline

Authorities in North Wales are urgently seeking the mother of a newborn after a baby’s body was discovered along the Menai Strait shoreline in Bangor on Sunday afternoon.

North Wales Police stated that the body was found by a member of the public near Siliwen Road shortly before 17:00 BST. The force has not yet released details regarding the infant’s age or gender, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Fiona Giraud, the director of midwifery and women’s services at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, issued a direct appeal to the mother during a press conference. She emphasized that the primary concern is the mother’s health and wellbeing, noting that she may be feeling frightened, overwhelmed, or unsure of her next steps.

“We recognise that you may be fearful of seeking support through fear of identifying yourself,” Giraud said. “You may feel you have nowhere to turn… Please do not feel that you have to face this alone.”

Giraud urged the mother to contact healthcare professionals, approach a police officer, or visit a station, adding that while the full circumstances are not yet known, ensuring the mother receives medical attention is the immediate priority.

Detective Sergeant Kelly Wynne highlighted concerns that the mother may be unable to reach out for help herself. The investigation is appealing to the baby’s father, as well as family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, for any information. Officials asked the public to report any signs of a woman who may have been pregnant or exhibiting unusual behavior, such as withdrawing from social ties, over the past few months.

“We appreciate coming forward is difficult, but inaction is not an option,” Wynne said.
