As President Donald Trump prepares to host technology and artificial intelligence executives in Washington, Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) is advocating for an international treaty between the United States and China designed to prevent AI technologies from causing global harm. However, achieving consensus between leaders in both nations may prove difficult.
Khanna, who serves as the senior Democrat on the House Select Committee on China and is considered a potential presidential candidate, recently sent letters to a US intelligence agency and several major Chinese AI developers. In correspondence exclusively shared with The Verge, he asked whether these entities would be prepared to handle incidents similar to the summer hack of Hugging Face by OpenAI agents.
The Chinese companies contacted as part of this inquiry include DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Moonshot AI.
