A recent analysis from Northeastern University underscores the growing privacy risks associated with modern vehicles, which function similarly to smartphones by recording extensive details about driver behavior.
The study focuses on major manufacturers including Honda, General Motors, and Ford, revealing that these companies gather granular information such as driving locations, acceleration patterns, braking intensity, and steering aggression.
Legal questions surrounding this data collection remain contentious. Last year, the Federal Trade Commission fined General Motors for harvesting and selling precise location and driving habit data without obtaining proper informed consent from users. Additionally, Honda and Ford have been issued smaller penalties for creating obstacles that made it difficult for customers to opt out of data tracking.
