LONDON — Police cordons and roadblocks remained in place in the village of Whelford in southwestern England on Tuesday as investigators continued to examine a suspected terrorist plot linked to the nearby RAF Fairford air base. Five British nationals were arrested on Sunday but were released on bail the following day.
The suspects, identified as men aged 23 to 25 from London, were detained in the early hours of Sunday near three vans close to RAF Fairford. The base serves as a critical hub for U.S. Air Force operations, particularly regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran. Authorities stated the arrests were made on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses, leading to widespread speculation that the group may have intended to strike the military installation, potentially on behalf of a foreign state.
Laurence Taylor, head of the U.K.’s National Counter Terrorism Policing, confirmed the men were bailed on Monday but emphasized they remain under “stringent conditions on their movement and contact with others.” Taylor noted that investigators are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry, including the possibility that the activity was carried out by proxies or individuals working for a foreign power.
The arrests followed a tip from a local farmer and were initially hailed as a significant intelligence success. Former President Donald Trump praised the operation, stating it had been underway for a considerable time and that the suspects intended to cause significant harm to U.S. forces stationed at the base.
However, Trump expressed disappointment after the suspects were released. “I’m surprised that they released them,” Trump said during an Oval Office event on Monday. “I wouldn’t have done that. Look, they’ve been very good. They worked with us very closely. We know everything about them. We would not have released them.” He also suggested the men “might be” connected to Iran, though he did not provide further details.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also addressed the incident, confirming that a “foreign actor” was involved. Speaking to Fox News, Rubio described the situation as extremely serious but declined to disclose specific details. “There are some things I cannot say on the air for a lot of different reasons,” he said. “Suffice it to say that what happened, what almost happened, what could have happened in the U.K. over the weekend is a very serious situation. It is one that clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.”
Rubio acknowledged public concern over the bail decision, thanking British authorities for their cooperation. He warned of potential repercussions if threats against American interests materialize, specifically citing Iran’s open hostility.
The Iranian embassy in London issued a statement on Monday denying any involvement. The mission condemned what it described as “unfounded and malicious speculations” by British media and individuals, arguing that such narratives serve only to fuel anti-Iran sentiment in the context of recent actions by the U.S. and Israel.
The suspects have not been formally charged and remain under active investigation.
Iran denying involvement makes sense politically. Foreign state proxies are hard to prove either way until charges stick.
